Book review: Everything but Espresso

Monday, May 31st, 2010

While at the SCAA I was delighted to catch up briefly with Scott Rao, and gratefully receive a copy of his new book.  While Scott and I have disagreed online from time to time, it has been more about discussion and debate of ideas than any kind of personal conflict.

I was extremely excited when I heard about what he was planning for the new book, and I was in no way disappointed.  If you want a one word review, so you don’t have to go any further, then I’d probably say: essential.

About this.

I look forward to making coffee for people, haven’t done that since I used to do the occasional shift on Gwilym’s cart on a Sunday.  I will post some pics up here, or on flickr, or on the Square Mile blog (or maybe all of them) soon.

Hopefully see some of you there soon!  Happy to answer any questions in the comments!

Jobs

Monday, May 10th, 2010

I don’t often post work stuff on here, but I figure I am allowed to break my own self imposed rules once in a while.  I have a whole backlog of posts and comment responses that I will get too soon.

I plan to talk a little bit more in future about some of the ideas behind The Penny University, but for now I will say that we are about to close out the applications for the two jobs we have open there.  We hadn’t really posted the advert in a lot of places, and while we’ve had some great responses, I just wanted to make sure it was spread as far as could be.

You can read a little more about the project in the job descriptions.  I should also add that we’d be very uncomfortable asking anyone to relocate for a job, especially with work visas being so difficult right now.

If you have any questions do let me know, though we’re not releasing a lot more detail about the shop for a few more days.

Friends Pay Retail

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

On my recent trip to the US I had the occasional argument when it was time to pay for the coffee I was going to drink.  They were friendly arguments, I suppose more like short debates.  I generally did a very bad job of getting my point across, and still struggle to do so.  (This is at least the third draft of this post.)  I’ve been meaning to post for a while about why I am even worse than usual at accepting people’s kind hospitality.

It has become, over the last few months, increasingly important to me that I pay for the coffee I drink in people’s cafes.1 This might seem like a staggeringly obvious thing to say, but free coffee is unsurprisingly shared between those inside the industry – a sort of alternate currency.  In the past I have gratefully accepted, genuinely thankful for the gift and, while happy to pay, it would have felt rude to argue. Footnotes:
  1. I am aware that I failed to pay in a couple of places in the US, for which I apologise and am a bit embarrassed []
