Good points indeed. I am currently trying to round up ideas and material to inspire some of our store baristas for an in-house competition... not as easy as I first thought. #3 is a point I really agree with but have had a hard time getting to do. I participated in a regional and the US national competition last year. At both events I was only able to get a few minutes to look at my sheets afterwards and this was at a time where everyones head was still spinning and there was not a judge in site. It'd be nice to see a formalized avenue for that sort of thing so as to alleviate the need to drunkenly harass them at the inevitable after party (something tells that might be considered poor form)

I'm working on my plans right now. Want to be there for the HOST show and Med. Barista Cup, as well as "The Party but I do want to visit Maranello and make my pilgrimage to Ferrari.

"1). Pratise your routine"

Hate to bust on your chops James, but maybe you need to pratise your spelling!!!!

Lots of great points and you're right, it's amazing how few competitors came to discuss their scoresheets after. I tried to be very descriptive and thorough on the sheets, but I did not have one competitor ask me why or for further interpretation.

After competing, the chance to review your scores with your judges should be your priority.

Milan?

Thanks for putting this one up James. I hope you do write a more exhastive list, it can only improve the standard of the competition for the rest of us, and who knows, one day spawn another UK world champ.

Not wishing to state the obvious, but you have been in a remarkably rare and priviledged position re understanding competition and being able to prepare for it.

From my own experience, occasional run through practice was done very early morning just as the coffee machine warmed up, in front of imaginary judges and against my wrist watch. My preparation was a remarkably private affair as I know of no-one who'd watch me run-through and know what on earth I was up to. The hairdressers next door probably thought I'd lost a few marbles, talking to thin air and serving coffee to nobody and being stressy about it. Early customers would taste my cooled off signature drink and say it was lovely....and smile sypathetically to Sarah. He's clearly nuts.

I think lots of us who want to carry on competition would love to know more on the scoring front. Your point about it being a points game is almost the only point needing made.
