Having only returned home from Belfast late Friday night I’ve been somewhat frustrated knowing that a package of coffee has been waiting for me at the post office for a few days. Whilst Stephen Morrissey was over in Chicago at the start of the year he picked up a load of coffees from the nice people at Intelligensia and when he got back to Ireland he posted them on to me.
I cracked open the Idido valley as soon as I got home and made myself a Chemex of it and as it ground (I love having the Bunn G3A at home!) the kitchen was filled with some wonderful smells. I know this coffee isn’t at the peak of its freshness (must be nearly three weeks old and it has travelled quite a long way to boot) but it was delicious. Distinct and unusual fruit both in cup. Very pleasing. Especially looking forward to the Los Planes, which may well be my breakfast coffee tomorrow.
Still loving the Chemex (though I was grateful that Se brought his aeropress along to Belfast so I could get a nice cup of proper coffee during the day – nothing against espresso but you can’t really wander round with a nice warming cup of it in your hand and sit down and watch a competitor whilst savouring it!) and I find watching it brew quite satisfying - the coffee creeping up the filter paper and then the brew leaving a little empty volcanic crater behind….
